Quick Tip - Magnesium for health
A recent dietary study has found a connection between higher intakes of dietary magnesium and lower incidence of colorectal cancer. Researchers examined data from the Swedish Mammography Cohort, a study that followed the dietary patterns of 61,433 women for almost 15 years beginning in 1987. The women, aged 40 to 75, had not previously been diagnosed with cancer when they enrolled in the study.
By the end of the 15-year period, 547 women had developed colon cancer, 252 had developed rectal cancer, and six developed both colon and rectal cancer. Women whose magnesium intake was in the top 20% of all participants had a 41% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to those whose intake was in the lowest 20%. Magnesium-rich foods include avocados, beans, fish, leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
